Love. Biz. Travel.
Be careful what you wish for or, rather, be clear on your desires. I don’t know about you but I have to remind myself of this every once in a while, simply because when I want something bad enough I always get it.
I’m not talkin’ about the “oh it’d be nice if…” thoughts, but the “know it in my gut” desires.
I remember when I was working at an accounting office (and well pretty much every other job I had) – I’d be sitting there daydreaming (sometimes I’d go sit on the toilet just for some uninterrupted daydream time - is it just me that does that?) about my next vacation.
“If I could just figure out my purpose then I could have my own business doing THAT .... and I could travel and sleep in.”
Well, that wish came true for me a few years ago but it’s come to a whole new level as of late (in particular in regards to the travel part).
This year I sold my house (which we weren’t actually living in). Shortly thereafter my husband expressed that he wanted to take a work opportunity which would allow him to travel with me if he worked really hard for a bit.
We both do a lot of traveling, but usually separately. This discussion and decision spurred a huge change. We’ve actually been living a few provinces a part for the last month (with a few weeks to go... which sucks!). Soon, he’ll come pick me up and we’ll be packing all our stuff into storage. For 3 months we’ll be bouncing around while working steady (thank goodness I have a location independent business as I’ll be visiting about 5 cities).
After that? We are going traveling together in Southeast Asia for 2 months! I’ll have to leave Bali only to head to Mexico for The Pleasure Retreat (meet me there?) From there we have no idea where we will live and what we’ll be doing.
Now, I said be careful what you wish for because since all of this has come up A LOT of emotion and clarity has come along as well. The idea of being nomadic and free has always appealed to me. This literally is a dream come true.
The only thing is since all of this was decided I’m actually feeling MORE excited to “settle down”!
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still travel like nobody’s business but I’d really like to have a home. A community. Somewhere I don’t feel the need to leave. With all these new developments I’ve realized just how much I love Vancouver and my friends here (okay, I knew that part before!)
What I’ve learned from this experience so far is....
The importance of setting up a business foundation that allows for freedom AND security (sweet, sweet sustainability), spaciousness and consistency (OR whatever it is that YOU want). Not having to worry about money and getting a whole bunch of new clients has allowed me to be more present and not completely freak out.
Yes, there are ebbs and flows in the amount of business “hustle” required but I am committed to enjoying the ride all the way through. *I believe that is possible for you too.*
I’ve also realized just how important love and my relationships are to me. What’s the point of having an amazing successful business and life if you have no one to share it with? I see a lot of women rockin’ it in business but they are lonely. While I am not lonely (I actually REALLY love alone time), and I do have a frickin’ brilliant husband, I am open to the possibility of new soul satisfying, nourishing and playful friendships.
Another big lesson I’ve been learning over the last couple months is to be okay with changing my mind (including completely changing your business).
It’s okay to change your mind. – Tweet it.
So, if you are
doing work you don’t totally love
working way too much and not enjoying life
wishing you could travel more
thinking about changing your mind… even though you said your business is ________ or you don’t want a baby for another 2 years or that you want to be nomadic or really you just want to have a community you love….
Then just know that it’s okay AND you can have what you want. You just have to get clear on what you really, really want (without logic or thinking of what others will think!) and go for it. Follow your heart, always.
