What Marilyn Manson Taught Me About Business

There’s been a lot of hype lately around standing out in your business.  You too may have noticed this and found yourself wondering what makes you stand out.  And… I have to admit I have my moments of wondering this as well.

Unfortunately, this concept of needing and wanting to stand out often leaves people feeling like they need to do something or be someone that really isn’t them.

You may be a quiet introvert and find yourself thinking you need to be more outgoing and loud in order to stand out, for example.

It’s like this weird thing were people are telling you you need to stand out and be yourself, and you thinking how the heck can I stand out?  What do I need to do to stand out?  What will make people pay attention?

It’s like being on a date and asking the hunky man (or sexy lady) beside you “Who do you want me to be?  What can I do to make you like me?!”

Not exactly appealing right?!

Ultimately what’s most important for the success of your business and for the overall sense of fulfillment and freedom in life, is your authentic expression shared with the world to your fullest capacity.

Think about some of the people you admire the most.

Chances are they are so uniquely themselves that you just can’t help but love them.

Yesterday Garret and I were watching Marilyn Manson play a live show in Hollywood (a video, lord only knows how amazing it would have been to witness this live) with… Die Antwoord’s Ninja and Johnny Depp.  *Drool*

These 3 men have created die hard fans and followers not because they asked the world “What do you want from me?  Who do you want me to be?” but because they have and continue to be their crazy ass selves.  Naturally, that means there are going to be people who love them for who they are and those that don’t.  Perfect.  That’s what you want too.

(Behind the scenes thought process in writing this:  “Is it off brand to write include Marilyn Manson and Die Antwoord as examples?”  Ummm maybe, but no.  My brand is me and just because I like bright, happy, joyful, positive things does not mean that I can’t get down with some DA.  They had one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to btw.  Keep this in mind the next time you have similar thoughts cross your mind.  Your brand is you.)

If you’re like me you might be thinking something like “but, I’m not crazy or interesting.  I don’t even take a strong stand on either side of things…I hate controversy and conflict.  I’m kinda…boring.”  Me too.  However, I now know that I’m not boring (to my people) and I assure you that you aren’t to your people either.

Trying to please someone else by being someone you aren’t. 

I’m going to go ahead and say that you KNOW what makes you unique.  You know what you stand for.  It’s just so natural to you that you don’t think anyone would even notice OR you’ve been so busy trying to fit in that you’ve lost or buried that sense of self.

Well, my friend, it’s time to come out.

It’s time for you to be more you than ever before.  Not so that you can stand out, but simply because this is your purpose.  You weren’t put here on earth to be anything but yourself.  There’s only one you, and if you don’t share yourself that means that the world, your friends, your clients will missing out, and that’s just not fair.

We are waiting, although, not so patiently anymore.
